Barcelona defender Gerard Pique lost in the National Court, a case that started from the Tax Agency. They accused him of simulating the sale of their image rights to one of their companies for what he had to pay €1.5m.

In June 2013, the Treasury sanctioned Pique for the taxes of 2008, 2009 and 2010. They thought that he had evaded the payment of almost €1.5m and was fined with the payment of around €678k. Cristóbal Montoro at the time was still head of the ministry.
He then opened investigations to the footballers playing for big clubs . He also checked where did the agents' money come from, since he suspected that it was a football service.
He suspected that some money were stolen from the treasury by the teams who took over. The Treasury considered that the sale of its image rights to its companies was a simulation.
