Messi gets his second red and referee explains why

As Argentina thrashed Chile 2-1 to gain third-position in the Copa, there is another interesting incident happening again after Brazil's victory over Argentina.

Lionel Messi and Gary Medel were red-carded by Paraguayan referee Diaz de Vivar in the 37th minute. Both seemed to be dueling and the referee immediately gave both players a red.

de Vivar has his reasons to send them off the pitch.

Messi has earned 2 red cards since then

According to the referee report, it is written that

-Messi 'use languages/gestures offensive, insulting or humiliating; For confronting the opponent, in an incident when the ball was no longer in play, giving a strong blow with the shoulder to the opponent', while

-Medel 'use languages/gestures offensive, insulting or humiliating; For confronting the opponent, in an incident when the ball was no longer in play. Brutally beat with the chest and arm the opponent to be contained by their peers.

Argentina managed to secure the third place in the Copa. Sergio Aguero(12') and Paulo Dybala(22') helped La Albiceleste secure a two-goal lead before Arturo Vidal netted a penalty in the 59th minute. The 10-men squad managed to keep the score at 2-1 before full-time.

Although his teammates collected their medals from the podium, Messi, who never achieved an international trophy for his country, refused to have a touch of it.

"I didn’t go to the podium because we shouldn’t be part of the corruption and lack of respect," the 32-year old said.

"We were meant for more but they didn’t let us be in the final. The corruption and the refs didn’t allow the people to enjoy and football is ruined. The corruption and the referees didn’t allow us to be in the final. You have to say the truth."

"Brazil champions? No doubt. Sadly, I think it’s set up for Brazil."

"Hopefully the refs and VAR will have nothing to do with it and Peru will be able to compete because they have the team to do it. But I see it as difficult."

Messi received his first red when representing Argentina against Hungary in 2005. He was 18 at that time, and sent off just after 44 second being substituted in the second half. The referee of the match, Markus Merk, claimed that he elbowed Hungarian defender Vilmos Vanczak.
