Mourinho expressed his desire to start a new challenge after sacked Manchester United at December 2018. He had been linked to Chelsea and Inter Milan, Celtic, and Newcastle, however, he decided to turn his head to international football.
The 56 year old Portuguese manager had been working as a commentator for Bein Sports and being a host of his show, On the Touchline with Jose Mourinho after being sacked from his coaching job in Old Trafford.
He believes that coaching a national team is a special opportunity to improve himself. He had won trophies with Porto(Portugal), Inter Milan(Italy), Chelsea(England), Manchester City(England), Real Madrid(Spain), Manchester United(England), including Champions League and Europa League ones.
"I want to compete in new competitions," he said. "I think about the World Cup and the European Championships. For a long time, I had the desire to try out such an adventure. Right now, I see myself more at a national team that with a new club."
"Is Portugal the right team for me?" he continued. "Not necessarily. Winning a fifth championship in a different country or the Champions League with a third club are things I'd like to do"
"I wouldn't do it just for that. I only go where a project convinces me. I want to be happy, not necessarily win, I want to be happy and I don't want to accept a proposal without being convinced of it, that's what I've always thought. That's why if someone told me 'Today there are no conditions to win, but we want you to create the conditions to win,' then I would evaluate it."
