UEFA plans to add extra substitutions for concussed players

Updated: Jul 3, 2019

UEFA requested to FIFA to change the current rules to let players suffering from concussion be substituted.

UEFA is concerned of this matter after Spurs fought against Ajax in the first leg of the semi-final when Jan Vertonghen needs to be replaced with Moussa Sissoko. Their defeat is something bad, but his injuries are much worse.

The defender got an injury in his head and the club's medical staff treated him. He seems fine after being treated, however, he lost his balance while playing and need to be carried along the way into the tunnel.

Due to the incident, now UEFA wanted FIFA to make it possible for extra substitutions to happen and allow more time to assess injuries. UEFA rules state that the referee must stop the game and medical staff have 3 minutes to treat the player and decide if he is concussed.

However the English FA Cup, unlike the UEFA, requires players to be substituted if they have a possibility of being concussed.

UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin said, "The health of players is of utmost importance and I strongly believe that the current regulations on concussion need updating to protect both the players and the doctors and to ensure appropriate diagnosis can be made without disadvantaging the teams affected."
